Specialist local car rental provider launches website in UK

A car hire provider specialising in listings of local and independent car rental operators, has launched in the UK for the very first time. RentMama.com has been introduced in the North East of England as part of a pilot scheme where it has already recruited 30 local vehicle hire companies offering more than 2000 vehicles for hire in total.

RentMamma.com was first introduced in Latvia in 2010 where the model proved very successful with car hire consumers. The website succeeded in attracting 70% of Latvia’s car hire providers to its website, helping to offer customers a wide range of car hire operators all in one place.

While global brands offering consumers the opportunity to compare car hire prices across a wide range of providers are proving very popular with car hire consumers, RentMamma.com believes there is a gap in the market for a comparison site which focuses on local and independent car hire operators in specific areas.

RentMamma.com insist that local providers are often able to offer flexibility in terms of an increased choice of pick up and drop off locations, also more affordable deals and cheaper hire options for younger drivers. As well as offering great benefits to the customer, RentMamma.com believes their website will also provide a boost to local businesses.

The specialist local and independent car hire broker believes it has the capability to revolutionise the UK’s car hire market with its easy to use website offering the pick of the best local car hire deals.

Reckless drivers to be hit with on-the-spot-fines

Reckless drivers and boy racers are being targeted under new government plans which will force drivers to pay a £100 on-the-spot-fine for carrying out dangerous manoeuvres behind the wheel.

Transport Secretary Phillip Hammond will outline his new plans today to give police renewed powers to punish dangerous drivers who are seen tail gating other vehicles, under taking or weaving in and out of traffic, and carrying out other reckless driving acts.

The powers will enable police officers to issue fines of a minimum of £80 and 3 points on the licence without having to go through the courts. It is hoped the new legislation will help combat persistently dangerous drivers.

Those drivers who are disqualified will be forced to retake their tests and those who continue to breach driving laws and cause danger on the roads could have their vehicles seized.

As well as targeting bad drivers, the government also want to tighten the penalties for drink and drug drivers. New plans are expected to introduce a drug driving offence, as the law currently demands that police must prove a person has taken drugs and it has affected their driving for that person to be charged.

The loophole which allows some drink drivers to dodge charges by requesting a blood test, is also under review. It’s likely that the right to a blood test under these circumstances will be repealed.

Economy Car Hire reveals its expansion plans for 2011

The Economy Car Hire Company has unveiled its ambitious expansion plans for the coming year which it hopes will enable it to become a major force within the car rental industry throughout Europe.

The car rental firm is planning to recruit new car hire suppliers in major tourist destinations such as Spain, Portugal and Turkey so as to ensure they are able to offer holidaymakers flocking to these locations over the coming months the most competitive deals on car hire.

As well as developing its supplier base in these European holiday destinations, Economy Car Hire is also planning to target car hire companies in the UK in order to tap into the growing trend for “staycation” breaks in Britain which have become increasingly popular with Brits since the economic downturn took hold.

Economy Car Hire work in a unique way as the price they offer customers is inclusive of all taxes, additional driver fees, and insurance costs so the price they see when they request a quote, is the price they pay.

While the car hire firm’s quote may not appear as the cheapest when customers search for deals using a price comparison website, the car rental experts point out that Economy offers a very affordable deal when you consider that all of the extra costs are inclusive in their price, while other car hire providers may tag on surcharges after the booking which will bump up their overall price.

Car rental firms in US join together to oppose plans for new legislation

Three leading car hire firms, Hertz, Avis/ Budget, and Enterprise who own both Alamo and National, have all joined together to oppose new legislation proposals in the US put forward by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Under the new proposals, it would become illegal for car hire companies to lease a vehicle to a paying customer if the car has been subject to a recall order from the manufacturer. Current laws forbid the sale of cars which are affected by a recall notice in the US, and the proposed new rules would extend this rule to car hire companies as well.

The Safe Rental Car Act is the proposed legislation which the car rental companies are opposing as they believe the act has been drawn up based on inaccurate evidence.

The proposed legislation came off the back of a study conducted by the NHTSA which found that during the period of June 2006 – July 2010, 90 days after a recall notice on 10 GM and Chrysler models between this time, Enterprise had fixed 65% of their affected cars, while Avis/ Budget had corrected 53% of theirs, and Hertz had remedied 34% of their affected hire cars.

However the three car hire companies argue that this data is not a true reflection of the situation as the findings are not up to date. Since the proposed legislation is based on this study, the car hire firms are recommending that the new rules be reconsidered.
